Lesson 5 of 64 Module 1: Start today

AI app not working: eight fixes that actually help

9 min read Free, no sign-up 9 August 2026

After this lesson you can

  • Tell the difference between your phone's problem and the app's problem.
  • Read a limit message correctly instead of assuming you are blocked.
  • Know what to do when the app will not install.
  • Stop giving up at the first error.

Read first: Which AI app should you use first

You finally got the app open. Then it froze halfway through an answer. Or it said you had run out. Or it never installed at all.

That is where most people stop and never come back. This lesson is the eight things that actually go wrong, and what to do about each one.

Almost everyone hits one of these in week one

Nothing on this page means you did something wrong. These problems come from the phone, the signal, the app or the company behind it. They do not come from you.

One more thing before the fixes. These apps change every month. The screen in front of you may look nothing like the video you watched last week. Buttons move. Names change. Whole menus disappear.

So look for the job, not the button. There is always a place to type, a way to send, a way to start a new chat, and a small menu for settings. Find those four and you can use any of these apps. That habit comes back later in reading an old tutorial safely.

Before you fix anything, ask one question. Is this my phone, or is the tool down for everyone?

Two checks answer it. Ask a friend on another phone to open the same app. If it works for them, the problem is on your side. The big AI companies keep a page that says when their service is down. Search the app’s name with the word status, and open only the link on the company’s own website.

The app will not install

Two reasons cover almost all of it. Your phone runs an older Android version than the app needs. Or your storage is full.

Find both numbers before you try again. Open Settings and look for About phone. The Android version is written there. Then open Settings and look for Storage. That screen shows how much space is free.

Keep at least 1 GB free. Google itself names that as the point where installs start failing.

The four main apps do not ask for the same Android version. This surprises people. The app most likely to be sitting on your phone already is the one that asks for the newest Android.

AppNeeds AndroidDownload size
ChatGPT7.1 or newerabout 50 to 90 MB
Claude8.0 or newerabout 26 MB
Copilot8.0 or newerabout 200 MB
Gemini10 or newerabout 6 MB

Those numbers were checked on 9 August 2026. They move with every release. Look at the app’s own page in the Play Store before you install.

To make space, delete photos and videos you have already sent. Uninstall an app you have not opened in months. Clear the cache of your biggest apps.

Two different buttons Clear cache removes temporary files. It is safe and it keeps you signed in. Clear storage, sometimes called clear data, wipes everything and signs you out. Use clear cache.

Some phones say the app is not available for your device even when the Android version is fine. This happens on some secondhand and unbranded phones. You are not shut out. Open the tool in your phone browser instead. The browser version needs no install and almost no space.

Reinstalling is the last fix, not the first. On a small daily pack, downloading one of these apps again eats a large slice of your data. Using AI without finishing your data covers that properly.

It says you have reached your free limit

Free does not mean unlimited. Each app gives you a certain amount and then stops until it resets.

Read that message for a time, not for a number. Somewhere in it there is usually a reset time. That time is when the tool comes back for you. It is not a ban.

Ignore any fixed number you read online or hear in a video. The companies do not publish one, and they change it when they want.

Now the part that saves your evening. One app keeps several separate limits. Chat is one budget. Making pictures is another. Uploading a photo or a file is a third. Running out of pictures does not mean you are out of chat, so try the other thing before you give up.

Two moves the moment a limit appears. Copy your unfinished work into your notes app first. Then open a different free tool and carry on there. This is why it helps to have two apps ready, and which AI app you should use first helps you pick the second one.

It is slow, stuck, or it stopped halfway

This is almost always the signal. The words are arriving from a machine thousands of kilometres away, one piece at a time. A weak connection makes them crawl.

Do not tap send again. Every tap is another turn, and turns count against your free limit. You also end up with two half answers jumbled in one chat.

Wait for the whole answer. While words are still appearing, it is still working. Only when nothing has moved for a minute should you touch anything.

Then try the network swap. It takes two minutes and it works both ways. If you are on shared wifi, switch to your own mobile data. If you are on mobile data with one bar, try wifi. Standing near a window or stepping outside is sometimes enough on its own.

If the answer stopped in the middle of a sentence, do not ask the whole question again. Ask it to continue.

Continue from where you stopped. Do not start again.

A good reply picks up in the same sentence and finishes the thought. If it starts from the beginning instead, tell it exactly where to join.

Your last words were: the interest is added every.
Continue from there.

If the app closes itself and throws you back to the home screen, that is memory. It is common on phones with 2 or 3 GB of RAM, and it is a known behaviour, not your fault. Close your other apps before you start. Restart the phone if it closes twice. Copy each answer out as soon as it appears. Long chats make this worse, which is one reason for one chat, one job.

It signed you out again

You open the app and it wants a login all over again. Nothing has been deleted and nobody has banned you.

There are two usual causes. The first is a shared phone. Somebody else signed in with their own account, and yours got pushed out.

The second is cleaning. Those apps that promise to clean your phone, and the clear storage button, both wipe the saved login.

Sign in again with the same method you used the first time. If you started with a Google account, use that. If you started with an email address, use that email. If you sign in a different way, you may not see your old chats.

One warning worth reading before you make any account. Some apps send a code to a mobile number, and that number can then belong to only one account. On some of them the number cannot be changed later. In a house with one phone, decide whose account it is before you sign up.

When you finish on a shared phone, sign out on purpose. What happens to what you type explains why that matters.

The answer came back in the wrong language

You typed in Hindi and it answered in English. Or you wanted English and got Hindi. One line fixes it, and it holds for the rest of that chat.

Answer in Hindi from now on. Use simple words.
Answer in English from now on. Keep the sentences short.

If Devanagari is slow to read on your screen, ask for Hindi written in English letters. That is a normal way to answer, not a mistake.

Answer in Hindi, but write it in English letters.

One thing that confuses people. The app’s menu language and the answer language are two separate settings. Setting the menu to Hindi does not make the answers Hindi. You still have to ask. The next lesson, using AI in Hindi, takes this much further.

When nothing works, stop in this order

Some days the fault is not yours to fix. Giving up well is a skill, so here is the order.

Try the same tool in your phone browser. Then try a different free app. Then wait an hour. Then try again tomorrow. Then try a friend’s phone or a cybercafe computer.

If a box keeps asking you to prove you are a human and never lets you through, stop tapping. More tries make it worse, not better. Move to a spot with better signal and come back after an hour.

If a message says the tool is not available in your country, do not install a VPN. India is a supported country for the main apps. A VPN is usually what causes that message. Using one can get your account blocked or suspended.

Careful If a screen asks for a card, a UPI payment or a subscription, close it. Nothing in this course needs payment. Every lesson here works on the free level of these tools.

That is the eight. It will not install. You hit the limit. It is slow. It stopped halfway. It signed you out. It answered in the wrong language. It looks different from the video. And nothing at all is working.

You now know what each one means and what to do next. The next lesson is about getting better answers in your own language, in Hindi and in Hinglish. Before that, do the short practice task below. Those three numbers decide a lot of what follows.

Do this now

Write down your three numbers

  1. Open Settings on your phone. Look for Storage. Write down how many GB are free.
  2. Open Settings again and look for About phone. Write down the Android version.
  3. Open your SIM company's own app. Find how much data is left for today and write that down too.
  4. If less than 1 GB of storage is free, clear the cache of your two biggest apps and check the number again.
  5. Keep all three numbers in your notes app. They decide when you can use voice and pictures.

Remember this much

  • None of these errors mean you did something wrong.
  • Check first whether the tool is down for everyone. Then fix your phone.
  • A limit message carries a time. That time is when it comes back.
  • Chat, pictures and file uploads have separate limits.
  • Do not tap send twice. Each tap is another turn.
  • If a screen asks for money, close it. Nothing here needs payment.

Questions people ask

Why is ChatGPT not working on my phone?

Check first whether it is down for everyone. Ask a friend on another phone to open the same app. If it works for them, the problem is on your side, and it is usually weak signal, full storage or an old Android version. If it works for nobody, wait and try again later.

It says I have reached my limit. Am I blocked?

No. You have used the free amount for now. Read the small line under the message and look for a time. That time is when the tool comes back for you. Meanwhile you can copy your work out and carry on in a different free app.

Why will the app not install on my phone?

Either your phone runs an older Android version than the app needs, or your storage is nearly full. The four main AI apps do not ask for the same Android version, so one may install when another will not. You can also use the tool in your phone browser with no install at all.

The answer stopped in the middle. What should I do?

Type continue from where you stopped, and send that. The app will pick up the rest. This usually happens when the signal drops while the answer is still arriving. Do not send your whole question again, because that costs you another turn.

Do I need a VPN to use AI in India?

No. India is a supported country for the main AI apps. If you see a message saying the tool is not available in your country, a VPN is usually the cause, not the cure. Turn it off. Using one can get your account blocked.

Prices, free limits and app screens change often. The facts in this lesson were checked on 9 August 2026. If what you see on your phone looks different, trust your phone and read the idea, not the exact button name.
