Seven ways to check a maths answer

Read first: Why it gets sums wrong

You finish the sum and underline the answer. Then the doubt starts. Right now you can only ask a friend, a teacher or an app, and hope they are right.

Why this is a maths skill first

These seven checks are not an AI thing. Good students used them long before any app existed. An examiner has never given a mark for a confident wrong answer.

Checking is also where the easy marks sit. A slip in one line can cost you a whole sum you knew how to do. Knowing the chapter is not the same as landing the right number.

The AI part is small. In why it gets sums wrong you saw that a model can slip on plain arithmetic while the words around it look perfect. So you need a test that does not depend on the thing that gave you the answer.

There is a bigger reason too. In the exam hall there is no phone and no app. The checking has to already live in your head. An answer you never checked is also an answer you never really learned, which is the heart of the answer machine trap.

Checks one to three: put it back, guess the size, read the unit

Check one. Put the answer back into the question

Take your answer and feed it into the sum you started with. If both sides agree, the answer holds. If they do not, you have found your own mistake.

5y - 4 = 31
My answer: y = 7
Put it back: (5 x 7) - 4 = 35 - 4 = 31
Both sides are 31. The answer holds.

This works for word problems as well. Say the shopkeeper bought wheat at Rs 2,450 and you say he sold it at Rs 2,744. Then his profit is Rs 294. Is 294 out of 2,450 equal to 12 percent? It is. The story holds together.

Not every sum lets you put the answer back. A geometry construction will not. But every equation does, and so does almost every word problem about money, time or work.

Check two. Decide the size before you solve

Before you write a single step, decide roughly how big the answer should be. Round the numbers hard. Do the easy version in your head.

Real sum: 2,450 plus 12 percent profit
Rough sum: 2,500 plus 10 percent of 2,500
10 percent of 2,500 is 250
So the answer should be near 2,750

Now anything far from 2,750 is caught in two seconds. Rs 27,440 is out. Rs 274 is out. You did not redo the sum to know that.

Estimating has a second use in an objective paper. The four options are often far apart. A rough estimate can throw out two of them before you solve anything.

Check three. Read the unit

The unit is a free check that most students throw away. An area must come out in square centimetres, never in plain centimetres. A time must be in days or hours, never in rupees. A speed is in kilometres per hour.

Write the unit beside every answer, every time. Take a cylinder of radius 7 cm and height 10 cm. Whatever route you take, the total surface area has to end in square centimetres. If your last line says cm, you dropped a length somewhere.

In board work, also check which value of pi the question wants. NCERT sums usually take pi as 22/7.

Checks four to six: another road, real life, and your own hands

Check four. Solve it a second way

If two different methods land on the same number, that number is almost certainly right. Time and work sums are the easiest place to practise this. A finishes a job in 12 days. B finishes the same job in 18 days. How long together?

Method 1, units: LCM of 12 and 18 is 36.
A does 3 units a day. B does 2 units a day.
Together they do 5 units a day. 36 / 5 = 7.2 days.

Method 2, fractions: 1/12 + 1/18 = 3/36 + 2/36 = 5/36
So the whole job takes 36/5 = 7.2 days.

Two roads, one destination. That is the check. It also leaves you with a spare method for the exam, which is worth more than the check itself.

Growth sums have their own second road. Do the years one at a time and compare that with the formula.

Rs 10,000 at 10 percent per year for 2 years.
Year 1: 10,000 becomes 11,000.
Year 2: 11,000 becomes 12,100.
So the interest is 12,100 - 10,000 = 2,100.

If the formula gives you a different number, one of the two is wrong. Find out which before you move on.

Check five. Ask if it could happen in real life

Some answers are wrong before any arithmetic is checked. A shopkeeper cannot make more profit than the money he took. A man cannot walk 400 km in one hour. A class of 32 students cannot have 41 passes. An age cannot be negative.

Read your answer out loud as a sentence about real people. If the sentence sounds impossible, it is. This check costs five seconds and it saves whole questions.

Check six. Do the last arithmetic yourself

Most mistakes are not in the method. They sit in the last line, where you add or multiply in a hurry. So do that final step again, slowly, on paper or on your phone calculator.

This matters twice over when an app gave you the answer. A model can carry a digit wrong or line up columns wrong, exactly like a class 4 slip, and still sound sure. It can even run a calculator correctly and then copy the number into its answer wrongly.

Money sums deserve this most of all. A wrong final number in a loan, a bill or a shop account costs you real rupees, not marks.

There is a one second version of this check for multiplication. The last digit of an answer is fixed by the last digits of the two numbers. Nothing else can change it. Multiply 473,829 by 6,481. The last digits are 9 and 1. Nine times one is nine. So the answer has to end in 9. Any answer ending in another digit is wrong. You knew that before checking a single carry.

Use this on your own long sums too. It will not tell you the answer is right. It only tells you when the answer is certainly wrong. That is still worth one second.

Careful Neat working is not proof. A wrong line can sit inside working that ends with a right looking answer. If you copy a method into your notebook, work out every line yourself.

Check seven. The answers at the back of the book

Your NCERT maths book prints answers at the back of the exercises. That is an anchor you can trust more than any app. Use it after you solve, never before you start.

Now the app has far less room to invent an answer, because it already has the right one. It can mostly only walk you towards it. There is more of this in making AI your maths teacher.

One sum, seven planted mistakes

Here is the sum. A shopkeeper buys a bag of wheat for Rs 2,450. He sells it at 12 percent profit. Find the selling price. The correct answer is Rs 2,744.

Below are seven wrong answers. Beside each one is the check that catches it fastest. Some are caught by more than one check. That is fine.

Rs 294Seven. The book. That is the profit, not the selling price. Wrong question answered.

Look at what the table shows. No single check catches everything. The estimate never notices a wrong unit. The unit never notices a wrong carry. That is why there are seven and not one.

There is an order that saves time. Run the estimate and the unit first, because they take seconds. Then read the answer as real life. Then put it back into the question. Keep the second method and the book for the sums you are still unsure about.

A student who does these seven things does not need to trust any tool. Take help from an app, a friend, a video or a teacher, and still keep the final say yourself. Very few students work that way. It is a habit worth building early.

Start with the two fastest ones. Estimate before you solve. Write the unit after you solve. Add the others as they turn into habit. The same instinct works far outside maths, and your checking habit on one page is built on it.

Re-check three sums you already believed

  1. Open your notebook. Pick three sums you have already solved and marked as correct.
  2. For each one, cover your working and write a rough estimate of the answer first.
  3. Compare each estimate with the answer you wrote. Circle any answer of the wrong size.
  4. Now write the unit beside all three answers. Check the unit matches what the question asked for.
  5. Redo the last line of arithmetic in all three sums on your phone calculator.
  6. Write down how many of the three had a problem. Do this again next week.

Remember this much

  • Guess the size of the answer before you solve. Wrong size is caught in seconds.
  • Put your answer back into the question and see if both sides agree.
  • Write the unit after every answer. Area in cm is always wrong.
  • Two different methods landing on one number is strong proof.
  • Do the last line of arithmetic yourself, every single time.

Questions people ask

How do I check a maths answer without a calculator?

Put the answer back into the original question and see if both sides agree. Then check the size against a rough estimate, and check the unit. These three cost you under a minute and need nothing but a pen.

What does substitution mean in checking an answer?

It means putting your answer back into the question you started with. If you solved 5y minus 4 equals 31 and got y equals 7, you work out 5 times 7 minus 4. If that comes to 31, your answer holds.

Does NCERT give the answers at the back of the book?

Is estimating the same as guessing the answer?

No. Guessing gives you a number. Estimating gives you a range that the real answer must sit inside. You round the numbers, do the easy sum in your head, and then you know what size to expect.

Can I just ask the AI to check my answer?

You can, but it is a weak check on its own. It can slip on the arithmetic itself, and a wrong line can hide inside working that ends with a right-looking answer. Use your own checks first, and use the app for hints and explanation.
