Read first: The answer machine trap

It is ten at night. Your equation will not balance, and nobody in the house can help you. An AI app will sit with that equation for an hour and never get irritated.

It will also hand you a wrong answer in the same calm voice. This lesson gives you the habits that catch the wrong ones.

Where it is safe, and where it is not

Chemistry is not one subject to these apps. Some parts they handle well. Some parts they get wrong again and again.

The middle row matters more than it looks. A large chemistry test published in 2025 measured this. The models beat human chemistry experts on many of its questions. But their score did not fall as the molecules got harder.

The people who built that test drew the obvious meaning. The models may not be working out the structure at all. They are matching things they read before.

A second chemistry test, from February 2026, put questions into four levels of difficulty. Basic chemistry was handled well. Accuracy dropped clearly as the questions got harder. So do not carry one trust level around for the whole subject.

The bottom row is the hardest one to accept, because the fix costs you effort. A 2025 study tested a leading model on physics concept questions. Typed questions came back right about 81 times in 100. Questions that needed the model to read a picture came back right only about 49 times in 100. The same weakness shows up in chemistry whenever the question sits in a drawing. So type your question out in words. Do not photograph it.

Typing a reaction scheme out in words is slow. It is also the moment you find out whether you understood it.

So here is a trap worth knowing. Testing the app on a back exercise from your NCERT book proves nothing. That question sat in its training data. Test it on a question you changed yourself, and you will see the real level. The same idea, for every subject, is in the answer machine trap.

One free habit before you start. Ask in English first, even broken English, then ask for the same answer in simple Hindi. Measured scores in 2025 were lower in Hindi than in English on the same questions. Using AI in Hindi covers this properly.

Balancing: ask for a table you can count

Do not accept a balanced equation on its own. Ask for the counting too.

Balance this equation: Fe + H2O -> Fe3O4 + H2
Then give me a table with three columns.
Column 1: Element.
Column 2: number of atoms on the LEFT side.
Column 3: number of atoms on the RIGHT side.
Do not explain anything. Just the balanced equation and the table.

Say it comes back with this equation: 3Fe + 4H2O -> Fe3O4 + 3H2. Under it sits the table.

Now read the table. Iron matches. Oxygen matches. Hydrogen does not: eight on the left, six on the right. The answer is wrong, and you found it in ten seconds.

You did not need to know any chemistry to find it. You only needed to count. That is the whole point of the table habit. It turns trust into arithmetic, and arithmetic you can do yourself.

Then send this back.

Your own table shows 8 hydrogen atoms on the left and 6 on the right.
Fix the equation so every row matches. Give me the table again.

It should return four molecules of hydrogen gas on the right, not three.

If it fails the table twice on the same equation, stop asking. Two wrong tries in a row usually mean it is guessing. Balance it on paper with your book open instead. Then ask it to explain why your coefficients work. That way round it is teaching, and you are the one holding the answer.

Now count the atoms in the printed equation yourself as well. The table is the app’s counting, not yours. A wrong equation with a matching wrong table is possible, and the equation is the thing that goes in your notebook.

Try this now Take the equation you got wrong in your last chemistry test. Ask for the balance and the table. Check the table before you read anything else in the answer.

Make it show the valency before the formula

The same idea works for writing a formula. A formula that arrives with no working is a formula you cannot check.

I need the formula of aluminium oxide.
First write the valency of each element on its own line.
Then show the swap that gives the formula.
Then write the final formula on the last line.
Do not skip the middle step.

A good answer looks like this.

Aluminium: valency 3
Oxygen: valency 2
Swap: aluminium takes 2, oxygen takes 3
Formula: Al2O3

Four lines, and you can check every one. If the final formula is wrong, you can see which line went wrong. That is far more useful than a bare formula that you either trust or do not.

Wrong molecular formulas are one of the common failures here. Forcing the working into the open is how you catch them early.

The round trip that catches a wrong name

Every compound has one official name, built from a set of rules. That is its IUPAC name. This is where these apps name compounds with total confidence, including compounds that do not exist. The check is a round trip. Ask one way, then ask the other way.

In your first chat:

Give the IUPAC name of this compound: [describe your structure in words,
or write the formula from your book].
Give the name only. No explanation.

Now open a brand new chat and paste this:

Describe the structure of [paste the name it gave] in words.
Count the carbon atoms in the main chain.
List every functional group and say which carbon it sits on.
Do not make a picture.

If what comes back is not the compound you started with, something is wrong. You now know there is a problem, though not yet which side has it. Take both answers to your chemistry book. There is also a free cross-check that cannot make things up: PubChem, at pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Search the name there and you see the real structure and molecular formula. It is a database, not a chatting model.

One part of this is not optional. The second chat must be a brand new one. Do the second half in the same chat and the check is worthless. The app can still see the name it just gave you. It will agree with itself.

This is measured, not a guess. One 2025 test used Indian entrance exam questions in physics, chemistry and maths. A leading model fixed only about 5 of its own errors in every 100. Another 2026 study found something worse. When these models are wrong, they tend to pick the same wrong answer again and again, with high confidence.

So “are you sure?” is not a check. A brand new chat, with the question in your own words, is a real one. You met this as the two-chat test. Chemistry is where this check matters most.

How confident the answer sounds tells you nothing at all. In one test, a model was asked to rate its own confidence on chemical safety questions. It gave a low rating to the one question it got right, and a high rating to the six it got wrong. The signal was backwards.

Getting a mechanism out of it, step by step

Class 12 organic mechanisms are long chains of reasoning, and long chains are where these models slip. A test of organic mechanism reasoning published in October 2025 put it plainly. The models show good chemical sense, but they struggle to keep a multi-step path correct and consistent.

So force the steps apart, and force it to name things you can compare.

Explain the mechanism of the SN1 hydrolysis of tert-butyl bromide,
for CBSE class 12. Go one step at a time.
For each step write four lines.
1. Which bond breaks.
2. Which bond forms.
3. What attacks what, and where the electron pair moves from and to.
4. The name of the intermediate that forms.
At the end, say which step is the slowest, and why.
Also say whether this mechanism is in the NCERT class 12 chemistry book,
and in which chapter.

Now you have something checkable. Compare each named intermediate with the figure in your NCERT chapter, one at a time. If an intermediate is not in the book’s path, stop there and ask about that step alone.

The slowest step is the sharpest check of the lot. Ask for it again in a new chat. If it names a different step as the slowest, one answer is wrong and you must go to the book.

Keep these chats short. A March 2026 study of AI tutoring found that teaching quality falls as the conversation runs on. In single messages, poor teaching showed up in under 2 answers in 10. Deep in a long back-and-forth, it showed up in nearly 8 in 10. The model gives up teaching and just hands over the solution. One doubt, one short chat, as in one chat, one job.

The four ways a chemistry answer goes wrong

Learn these four shapes and you will recognise a bad answer faster.

  1. An invented reaction that looks completely normal on the page.
  2. Conditions that are wrong, or quietly missing. Temperature, catalyst, solvent.
  3. A wrong molecular formula inside an otherwise sensible answer.
  4. A compound named with full confidence that does not exist.

Notice what they have in common. None of them looks wrong. They look like the rest of your textbook. That is why the table, the valency lines and the round trip matter so much.

Conditions deserve one extra line in every reaction question. Add this to your prompt.

For every reaction you write, state the conditions on a separate line:
temperature, pressure, catalyst, solvent.
If a condition is not needed, write NONE.
If you are not sure about a condition, write NOT SURE.

An app that writes NOT SURE has told you exactly where to open your book. An app that leaves the arrow bare has told you nothing.

Students really do miss these. In one study, learners solved physics problems with an AI app. Nearly half of the answers they handed in were wrong while they believed they were right. A wrong chemistry answer will not feel wrong either.

Asking the app to find its own mistake does not work well either. A 2025 study fed models chemistry descriptions with known errors inside them. The models were weak at spotting those errors, at pointing to where they sat, and at correcting them. You are the checker. Your book is the judge. Why AI makes things up explains where this habit comes from.

The laboratory, the diagram, and what comes next

An AI app can explain why an experiment behaves the way it does. That is real help, and it is often better than the one line in your manual.

It cannot tell you what happened on your bench. It did not see your salt, your burette or your colour change. Never ask it to fill your observation table. Go back to that 2025 physics study from the start of this lesson. Laboratory questions were its weakest area of all, at about 35 correct out of 100.

I have to do this class 12 chemistry practical: [name it].
Give me the aim, the apparatus list, and the steps in order.
Then tell me what I should observe, and two common sources of error.
Then five viva questions with short answers.
Do NOT invent any readings. Leave the observation table empty for me.
Careful Never follow an AI answer for handling, mixing, heating or storing a chemical. Ask your teacher or the laboratory in charge, and follow the printed lab manual. This is one place where a confident wrong answer can burn you.

There is a selfish reason to do the work yourself too. A study published in 2026 followed millions of practice sessions, before and after these apps arrived. School students cut their study time on the problems an app could solve for them. On tests taken under watch, the odds of a correct answer fell by about a quarter. In the exam hall there is no phone.

One rule carries over from every science lesson. Never copy an AI-made picture into your notebook or your answer sheet. In a 2026 check of medical journals, every AI-made anatomy picture the reviewers found had clear errors. Labels inside generated pictures are still often misspelled. Apparatus drawings are no safer, and your board exam gives marks for a neat hand-drawn labelled figure anyway.

Ask it to describe the apparatus in words instead. Then draw it yourself from the NCERT figure.

Balance one equation and check one name

  1. Pick one equation from your chemistry book that you find hard to balance.
  2. Ask the app to balance it and to give an atom-count table with three columns.
  3. Count the atoms in the balanced equation yourself and match them against the table.
  4. If any row does not match, tell it the row that is wrong and ask for both again.
  5. Now pick one compound from your book and ask for its IUPAC name.
  6. Open a completely new chat and ask for the structure of that name.
  7. If you do not get back the compound you started with, check the name in your book.

Remember this much

  • Definitions, standard reactions and balancing are usually fine. Pictures and lab work are not.
  • Never accept a balanced equation without an atom-count table you can check in ten seconds.
  • Make it show the valency of each element before it writes the formula.
  • Check a name by asking for the structure back, in a brand new chat.
  • For a mechanism, ask what attacks what, and which step is the slowest.
  • It can explain an experiment. It cannot tell you what happened on your bench.

How do I use AI to balance a chemical equation?

Ask it to balance the equation and then give you a table with three columns: element, atoms on the left, atoms on the right. Count the atoms in its equation yourself and compare them with the table. If any row does not match, tell it which row and ask again. You are checking arithmetic, not chemistry, so this takes about ten seconds.

Can ChatGPT give correct IUPAC names?

Often yes, and sometimes it names a compound that does not exist. Check it with a round trip. Ask for the name in one chat, then open a brand new chat and ask for the structure of that name. If the structure that comes back is not what you started with, one of the two answers is wrong.

Use it for the reason behind a reaction, not for the final answer in your copy. Ask for one doubt in one short chat, then close it. Make every answer checkable: an atom-count table for balancing, valency lines before a formula, and named intermediates for a mechanism. Confirm anything important against your NCERT chapter.

Is AI good for class 12 organic chemistry mechanisms?

It is good at explaining the idea and weaker at keeping a long mechanism correct all the way through. A test of organic mechanism reasoning published in October 2025 found models had good chemical sense but struggled with correct multi-step reasoning. Ask for each step separately with the intermediate named, then match each intermediate against the NCERT figure.

Can AI write my chemistry practical file?

It can give you the aim, the apparatus, the steps and viva questions. It cannot tell you what happened in your school laboratory, and readings it invents are both dishonest and easy to catch in a viva. Do the experiment, write your own observations, and never follow an AI answer for handling a chemical.
