Diagrams: it describes, you draw

Tomorrow there is a test and you have to draw a diagram in it. You ask an AI app to make the picture. What comes back looks like it was cut out of a textbook. Do not use it. Never copy an AI-made picture into your notebook or your answer sheet.

Not for revision, not for practice, not once. There is a better way and it costs you nothing. The rest of this lesson is why, and how.

Why the picture looks right and is still wrong

Two very different jobs hide inside the word diagram. One job is making something that looks like a diagram. The other is getting every part, position, count and label correct. These tools are good at the first job and poor at the second.

Think about what that means in a test. A ray diagram with the arrow pointing the wrong way loses the mark. It loses it just as surely as a wrong final answer does. Nobody gives you half a mark for a neat picture.

This is not a guess. A 2026 review of medical journals hunted for AI-made anatomy pictures inside published articles. Every one it found had serious anatomy errors. Those papers were written by trained doctors and checked by other doctors. The same review found wrong AI pictures on nearly half of the websites that sell anatomy courses.

If people who teach anatomy for a living did not catch the errors, you will not catch them either.

Labels are a second problem, and a separate one. The tool draws the shapes of letters. It does not spell words. Even after a big jump in quality during 2026, roughly half the text inside generated pictures still came out wrong. A label spelt slightly wrong is a mark you gave away in your own handwriting.

Careful Asking the app to write diagram code instead of a picture does not fix this. In a 2026 study, teachers checked 150 diagrams that AI had produced as code. Harder subject matter brought more mistakes, and the models often failed to spot their own errors.

Ask it to describe the diagram, not to draw it

Here is the replacement, and it works well. Ask for the diagram in words. Then draw it yourself.

Copy this and change the part in brackets.

Do NOT make a picture.
Describe the diagram of [name your diagram] in words,
for a class 10 student in India.
1. List every part I must draw, in the order I should draw them.
2. For each part, say where it sits: left, right, top, bottom,
   above or below.
3. Say which way every arrow points, and what each arrow shows.
4. Give the exact spelling of every label.
5. At the end, name the NCERT chapter and the figure, so I can
   check it in my own book.

A good reply reads like a set of instructions, not like an essay. For a simple circuit it looks roughly like this.

1. Draw a rectangle. This is the circuit loop.
2. On the left side, leave a gap and put the battery in it.
   Label: Battery, 6 V.
3. On the top wire, put the resistor. Label: R1, 2 ohm.
4. On the right side, in the same loop, put the ammeter. Label: A.
5. Across R1 only, add a small side loop holding the voltmeter.
   Label: V.
6. Draw one arrow on the top wire. Point it away from the long
   line of the battery. Label: current.

You can draw from that. You can also check it. Every line names a position, and a position is easy to hold against the figure in your book.

Watch the arrows most of all. In science an arrow is not decoration. It carries the direction of a ray, a current, a force or a flow. Turn one arrow around and the figure now says something else. So make the app name every arrow, and check every one yourself.

Try this now Take a figure you already know well. Ask for the word description of it. Then count how many lines you can prove wrong from your own chapter. That number tells you how far to trust it on a figure you do not know.

Then go and check it. NCERT chapter PDFs are free at ncert.nic.in/textbook.php, in English and in Hindi. Download the chapters you need once on a shared wifi connection and keep them on your phone. After that, checking costs you no data at all. It is the same checking habit as the two-chat test and three other checks.

Drawing it yourself is the part that teaches you

Now the part nobody expects. Drawing from a description is not a weak substitute for copying a picture. It teaches you more.

When you copy a picture, your hand moves and your head rests. When you build the same figure from words, you have to decide where each part goes. In that one minute you find out which parts you truly understood.

There is evidence behind this. A large 2026 study followed millions of practice sessions by school and college students. On the kind of question AI could do for them, students spent less time. On tests written in an exam hall, with no phone, they scored worse. Speed went up and learning went down.

Your exam hall has no phone in it either. Anything that puts the work back in your hand is worth more than three saved minutes. The answer machine trap is the full lesson on that idea.

When the question already has a diagram, type it out

Now the other direction. Your book gives you a question with a picture in it, and you want help.

Most people photograph the page. That habit points the app straight at its weakest skill.

In a 2025 test of physics questions, a model got about 81 out of 100 right when the question was written out in words. When the answer needed the picture, it got about 49. Practical and laboratory questions were the worst group of all, near 35.

A 2026 test on thousands of physics diagrams showed why. The model named the parts inside a diagram about 95 times out of 100. Asked how those parts were joined together, it got it right about 17 times out of 100. It sees the pieces. It does not see the wiring.

So type the picture out instead. A lens setup becomes this.

A convex lens has a focal length of 20 cm.
An object 5 cm tall stands upright on the principal axis.
It is 30 cm to the left of the lens.
F is marked 20 cm from the lens, on both sides.
2F is marked 40 cm from the lens, on both sides.
Find where the image forms, how tall it is, and whether it
is upright or inverted.

A circuit becomes this.

A 6 V battery has a 2 ohm resistor in series with it.
After that resistor, the wire splits into two branches.
One branch has 3 ohm. The other branch has 6 ohm.
The two branches join again and go back to the battery.
Find the current drawn from the battery.

Writing that takes one minute. It takes the app’s worst weakness out of the job. It is also a test of you. A student who cannot describe the circuit does not yet understand the circuit. There is more on typed science questions in learning physics with AI.

If you do send a photo, make it read the page out first

Sometimes typing is not sensible. The figure is dense, or the question is long. Then use the rule from earlier in the course. Never let it answer a photo straight away.

I am sending a photo of one question from my science book.
Step 1: type out every word, number and label you can see.
Step 2: describe the diagram you can see, part by part.
Step 3: tell me anything you could not read clearly.
Step 4: stop there. Do not solve it yet.

Read step 1 and step 2 against your book, label by label. If it read 6 V as 8 V, or put the switch in the wrong branch, everything after that is wasted. Only when the reading is right do you ask it to solve. Giving it your own book, notes or photo covers taking a photo it can actually read.

Two more things about photos. These apps are weak at counting things inside a picture. The company behind one of the big apps writes that limit into its own help pages. So never trust a count it took from a photo. Count the loops, the cells and the arrows yourself. A photo also eats far more data and free quota than a line of typed text, which matters on a small daily pack. Using AI without finishing your data has more on that.

Maps, geometry and biology work the same way

None of this is only about physics.

The pattern behind that table never changes. Ask for words. Draw by hand. Then hold your drawing against the printed figure.

Two free Indian sources make that last step easy. DIKSHA, at diksha.gov.in, is run by the Ministry of Education and carries textbooks and videos in Indian languages. For physics and chemistry you can also watch the real thing move at phet.colorado.edu. Those are free simulations that run inside a phone browser. A simulation is not a language model, so it cannot invent a part. Open it on wifi, because a simulation costs more data than a chat.

Chemistry has more traps of its own, and learning chemistry with AI goes through them one by one.

There is one more reason to draw by hand. Indian board exams give marks for a neat, hand-drawn, labelled figure. A printout does not earn those marks. Your pencil does.

The cheapest habit in this whole course

Most good habits in this course cost you something. Typing a question takes longer than photographing it. Checking against NCERT takes a minute you would rather keep.

This one costs nothing. Asking for a description takes the same single message as asking for a picture. Drawing takes the time it always took. The wrong method costs marks and the right method costs nothing at all. That balance does not come along often.

So carry one sentence in your head. It describes, you draw.

  2. Close the book. Type the describe prompt from this lesson into the AI app.
  3. Read the description once. Do not draw yet.
  4. Now draw it on paper from the description, with every label written in.
  5. Open the book and put your drawing next to the real figure.
  6. Circle every part that is missing, misplaced or misspelt. Those are the parts you did not know.
