Read first: The answer machine trap

The nearest computer class is in the town, and it charges a fee. Nobody in your house can teach you a spreadsheet. You have a phone, and maybe an hour on a computer somewhere.

What it teaches well, and what it cannot teach at all

Fix this split in your head before you open anything. An AI app is very strong on words and reasons. It does nothing for your hands.

Be honest about the evidence too. When this course was researched in August 2026, no study of AI for learning a trade could be found. So the first three lines of that table are worth trying. Nobody has yet proved they work.

An AI app also gives you no certificate. Employers ask for paper. For paper, look at the government’s Skill India Digital Hub at skillindiadigital.gov.in. Your nearest ITI or a PMKVY course also gives a certificate that employers accept. Use the AI to understand the course, and the institute to certify you.

One honest warning about what you choose. Plain data entry and plain typing work are the kinds of desk work being automated fastest. Learn the part of the job that needs your judgement.

Fifteen days to a usable spreadsheet

If you are not sure what to learn, start with a spreadsheet. A shop uses one. A school office uses one. A small company uses one.

Ask for the whole plan first, in one message.

I want to learn spreadsheets in 15 days. I have passed class 8 in India.
I get 30 minutes a day on a computer.
Give me a 15 day plan with one small task per day.
Each task must be finishable in 30 minutes.
Use a shop ledger (bahi khata) as the example all the way through.
Reply in very simple English. Short sentences.

You should get fifteen short lines, not an essay. Day one might be typing numbers into cells and saving the file. Day fifteen might be one small chart from your own numbers. If a day looks too big, say so and ask for that day to be split in two.

Then ask for one day at a time. Never ask for the whole course in one go.

Today is day 4 of my plan. Teach only day 4.
First show me one full worked example, every step, nothing skipped.
Then give me one task to do myself, using the same steps.
Do not give me the answer to my task.

Read the whole worked example before you touch the keyboard. Then cover it and do the task. That order matters. The answer machine trap explains why reading a finished solution feels like learning when it is not.

The third prompt is the one you will use most. Send it whenever a formula does not do what you wanted.

Explain in three short sentences what is wrong.
Then give me the corrected formula.
Then give me one similar practice task.

A good reply is short. Three sentences, one fixed formula, one task. If a long essay comes back, reply with “Too long. Three sentences only.”

The message to send when you are stuck

This is the single most useful prompt in the lesson, and it works for any tool. A spreadsheet, a phone setting, a government form website, a printer.

The app cannot see your screen. It knows only what you type. So type what is there, word for word.

I typed: [type exactly what you typed]
I expected: [say what you thought would happen]
What should I check next?
Give me three things to check, in order, one line each.
Then ask me one question if you need more from me.

Three parts do the work here. What you see. What you did. What you expected. Most people send only the first part, and then they get a general answer that helps nobody.

If the reply is a wall of text, push back. Ask for three checks only. Run check one, then tell it what happened, then run check two. This is slower to read about and much faster to do.

Do not do this over voice in a noisy room. Type the error message. Voice input mishears names, Hindi words and English words spoken with an Indian accent. One wrong letter sends the whole answer the wrong way.

Learning to program from zero

You need three things to start. A computer. Time. Patience. That really is the whole list.

You do not need to buy anything. Free tools exist that run inside a web browser. You open a page, you type code, and it runs. Nothing to install and nothing to pay. A phone is fine for reading, but a keyboard makes the typing far easier.

I want to learn programming from zero. I have passed class 8 in India.
I can use a computer for one hour, four days a week.
Suggest one language for a complete beginner. Say why in two lines.
Then give me a 15 day plan with one small task per day.
Day 1 must end with something that runs and prints my name on the screen.
Reply in very simple English. Short sentences.

Then use the stuck prompt from the section above, every single time something breaks. Broken code is the normal state of programming. Getting unstuck quickly is the skill.

One honest point before you start. Do not learn this only because you heard it leads to a job at a technology company. Hiring for people with under two years of experience at Indian tech firms fell sharply through 2026. AI and jobs in India gives you the real picture without the panic.

Learn it because you want to make something work. That reason survives a bad hiring year.

The coding tools you keep hearing about

You will hear names like Claude Code. These are assistants that write and run code on your own computer, driven by typed commands rather than a chat box. They are genuinely powerful. People build real, working things with them.

They also have a price of entry, and it is fair to state it plainly. You need a computer. You need internet that stays connected. You need to be comfortable with a plain text screen where you type commands, called a terminal. And most of them need a paid plan.

So this is a later step, not a first one. Finish a spreadsheet plan. Write twenty small programs. Then look at these tools, if you still want to.

Note You are not behind. This whole field is about six years old, and the first widely used chat app opened at the end of November 2022. Nobody in your district is ten years ahead of you.

One safety rule holds for any tool that can control a computer by itself. Never give it your bank details, your UPI PIN, your OTP or your Aadhaar number. What you must never type into an AI is worth reading before you go anywhere near these tools.

Trade skills: the words, not the hands

The same split holds for a trade. The AI teaches the vocabulary and the theory. The workshop teaches the work.

It handles this part well. What an MCB does in a house wiring board. What bobbin tension means in tailoring. What the parts inside a mobile phone are called. The difference between a ledger and a voucher in a Tally style account. Road sign and rule questions before a learner licence test.

I am learning [tailoring / mobile repair / electrical work / accounts] in India.
Give me 20 words used in this work that a beginner does not know.
For each word give three things:
the English word, the meaning in one simple line,
and the Hindi meaning in brackets.
Then ask me five questions to check whether I remember them.

If your repair manual is in English, paste one page and ask for simple Hindi. Then run a check. Ask for that Hindi turned back into English, and see whether it still says what you thought it said. A meaning that changes on the way back was never safe to act on.

For licence questions, use it to practise and then confirm against the official booklet from the transport office that issues learner licences, the RTO. Ask what a sign means and why. Do not treat the AI answer as the rule itself.

Careful Never follow AI instructions for live electrical work. The same goes for gas, for a moving machine, and for anything where a mistake burns you or cuts you. Ask the AI what a part is called. Ask a qualified person how to touch it.

Teach it back, then write it down

Here is the strongest learning check in this course, and it takes four minutes.

I just learned [name the topic]. Here is my explanation, in my own words:
[write four or five sentences yourself. Do not copy anything from the screen.]
Now do three things.
1. Tell me which parts of my explanation are correct.
2. Tell me which parts are wrong or missing.
3. Ask me two questions about the parts I did not mention at all.
Do not rewrite my explanation for me.

Notice what this is not. It is not asking “did I get it right”. It is you doing the explaining and the app doing the marking. If you cannot write those five sentences without looking, you have not learned it yet. That is useful to find out today rather than in an interview.

Do this at the end of every learning day. Then write in your own notebook: the date, the prompt that worked, and the thing that went wrong. Apps rename their buttons and their models every few months, so screenshots go stale fast. Your notes about how you think through a task do not.

Come back to those notes two to six weeks later and redo one old task from memory. Spacing practice out like that is one of the few study habits with solid evidence behind it. It is also why checking your own answers is worth more than any single clever prompt.

Get a fifteen day plan and do day one today

  1. Pick one computer skill you actually want. Spreadsheets are the safest first choice.
  2. Ask for a fifteen day plan with one task per day, each one small enough for thirty minutes.
  3. Read the whole plan. If any day looks too big, ask for that day to be split in two.
  4. Ask it to teach only day one, with a full worked example first.
  5. Do day one today, not tomorrow, with the example covered. If you have no computer today, do the reading part on your phone and fix a time for the rest.
  6. At the end, explain day one back to the AI in your own words and ask what you missed.

Remember this much

  • AI is strong on words, reasons and getting unstuck. It is no help with your hands.
  • Ask for a fifteen day plan, then ask for one day at a time.
  • When stuck, type exactly what is on the screen and exactly what you expected.
  • Programming needs a computer, time and patience. It does not need money.
  • Command line coding assistants are a later step. Nobody is behind for skipping them.
  • Explain it back to the AI and ask it to find the gaps in your explanation.

Questions people ask

Can I learn computer skills with AI for free?

Yes for the learning part, and no for the certificate. An AI app can plan your course, explain every step and get you unstuck at eleven at night, all at no cost. It cannot give you paper that an employer accepts. For that, look at the government's Skill India Digital Hub, an ITI, or a PMKVY course.

How do I learn Excel with AI?

Ask for a fifteen day plan with one task per day, then ask it to teach one day at a time. Tell it to show a full worked example before it gives you a task. When a formula does not do what you wanted, paste the formula and paste exactly what the cell shows. Ask for three short sentences on what went wrong.

Can AI teach me coding if I have no computer?

It can teach you the ideas on a phone, but you cannot really learn to program without a computer. Code needs a keyboard and a wide screen. Free tools that run inside a web browser mean you do not have to buy or install anything. So the thing to arrange is an hour of computer time, not money.

Should I use Claude Code or a normal AI app?

Start with a normal chat app. Tools like Claude Code write and run code on your own computer and they are genuinely powerful. They also need a computer, steady internet, comfort with a plain text terminal, and usually a paid plan. That is a later step, and you are not behind for not using one.
