Writing a resume that is true

A shop in town wants a helper, and the owner asks you to bring a resume. You have never had an office job. You sit with a blank page and feel there is nothing to put on it.

There is. This lesson turns what you have really done into one honest page, in one sitting.

You have more to write than you think

Start with what is true. You passed class 8. That is a qualification and it goes on the page.

Now think about work. Not office work. Any work.

• you sat at the family shop and took money.
• you worked on the family land.
• you repaired cycles, pumps or phones for people.
• you taught a younger brother or sister.
• you filled online forms for neighbours.
• you counted stock and closed the shutter at night.

Every one of those is work. An employer wants to know three things. Do you turn up, do you count money correctly, and can you talk to a customer politely. Your list already shows some of that.

Write your list on paper first. Ten lines is plenty. Write it in Hindi if that is faster for you. The AI cannot build a page out of things it has never been told.

You need one more thing before you start. A way for the employer to reach you. That means a phone number that stays with you, and an email address if you have one. If the number belongs to your father or your brother, write whose it is. An employer who calls and reaches a confused stranger simply moves to the next name.

The one line that stops it inventing a diploma

An AI writes by guessing what usually comes next. So when your details look thin, it fills the gap by itself. You get back a neat resume with an ITI certificate you never did.

It is not lying on purpose. It is the same habit you saw in why AI makes things up. You stop it with one rule, and that rule goes in every resume prompt you ever write.

Do not add any experience, skill or qualification I did not give you.
If something is missing, leave it out or ask me a question.

Then read the reply against your paper list. If a line is not on your list, delete it. Do not keep it because it looks impressive. A person will ask you about it later.

Say what you really did, in plain words

Ordinary work sounds small in three words. It sounds real when you say what you handled, for how long, and how much.

Look at these three pairs. The left side is what people write. The right side is the same truth, said properly.

Nothing new was added on the right. The right side only adds the number, the time and the name of the task.

Use your own numbers, never mine. Count your shop’s customers on a normal day. Ask your father how many bigha the land is. A small number you can defend beats a big word you cannot.

The AI is good at this rewriting job, if you feed it the truth first.

The prompt to copy

Here is the full request. It follows the same shape you learnt in how to ask so you get a useful answer. Change every line to your own truth. Keep the rules at the bottom exactly as they are.

I am making a one page resume. Here are my true details.

Rules:
Do not add any experience, skill or qualification I did not give you.

Use very simple English and short sentences.
One page only. One column. No table, no photo, no design.
Headings only: Contact, Education, Work, Skills, Languages.
First repeat back to me, item by item, what you understood.
Then write the resume.
Then give me the same resume again as plain text I can paste into a form.

That read back line matters more than it looks. Names of villages and people go wrong often, and they go wrong badly when you speak instead of type. In one 2026 test of voice form filling in rural India, real speech cut form accuracy hugely compared with clean typed text. So check your name, your village and every number letter by letter before you go on.

What comes back should look plain and small, like this.

That page will not win a design prize, and it does not need to. Every line on it can be checked by asking you one question. That is the whole point.

If you have the job advertisement, paste it in too. Ask it to use the advertisement’s own words wherever they honestly apply to you. The lesson on asking for the answer in the shape you need has more on controlling the form of a reply.

A machine reads it before a person does

Many companies now put your resume through software before any human sees it. Big Indian companies run this kind of software, and so do many startups. That software reads plain text well and pretty design badly.

So keep the page boring on purpose.

• one column, top to bottom, never two.
• no table, no box, no logo, no photo.
• simple headings, in ordinary words.
• save it as a document or a text PDF.
• give the file a plain name, like ram-kumar-resume.pdf.

Never send a photo of your resume taken with a phone camera. The software often cannot read an image at all.

The software is also looking for the words the advertisement used. If the shop asked for a person who can keep a stock register, then write stock register, in those words. Do not write inventory management because it sounds bigger. Use the advertisement’s word only when it is honestly true of you. Where it is not true, leave the gap. A gap is normal. An invented line is not.

This is also why you asked for a plain text copy. Many application forms give you a box to paste into, not a place to upload. Keep that text version in your notes app and it is ready any evening, even when your data pack is nearly finished.

One worry you can drop. Researchers ran a large test in 2025 to see whether AI screening software punished AI written resumes. It did not. It rated them as well as human written ones, and often preferred them.

What to leave out

A resume is not a family record. Some lines help nobody and can quietly cost you.

Leave out caste, religion and marital status. Leave out your parents’ income. Add a photo only when the advertisement asks for one. Send no photo at all to a stranger you found online.

Keep your address short. Your village, your block and your district are enough. A full house address plus a photo, sent to an unknown number, gives away more about you than any employer needs. This matters especially for young women applying from home.

Keep only the lines you can defend

Here is the test that decides what stays on your page. Could you talk about this line for one minute, right now, with no warning and no preparing? If not, it comes off.

The AI can run that test on you before an employer does.

After each answer, tell me in one line whether it was clear.
Use simple English.

Answer out loud, not in your head. If a question about your own resume leaves you silent, that line is either untrue or too vague. Delete it, or replace it with the smaller thing you actually did.

Using AI this way is not cheating. You gave the facts and you checked them. The machine only put them in order on a page.

Your page is ready. Next comes the letter that travels with it, in applications and formal letters. After that, practising for an interview takes the same ten questions and turns them into answers you can say without shaking.
